Contrary to popular belief, SOS doesn't stand for "Save Our Souls" or "Save Our Ship." The 🆘 was chosen in 1905 simply because its Morse code (···---···) is easy to transmit and recognize. The letters were assigned meaning retroactively.

Using 🆘 casually for minor problems (like "SOS need coffee") is common but can dilute its emergency meaning. In serious contexts, SOS indicates life-threatening situations. Most people understand context, but in safety-critical apps, SOS should retain its emergency significance.
