The name 'Union Jack' (or Union Flag) comes from combining the crosses of England's St. George, Scotland's St. Andrew, and Ireland's St. Patrick into one design. It represents the union of these nations. Technically 'Jack' refers to naval use, but both terms are acceptable.
When the Union Flag was created in 1606, Wales was already legally part of England following the Laws in Wales Acts. By 1801 when Ireland's cross was added, Wales still had no separate representation. There are periodic proposals to add Welsh elements to the design.
