The rainbow flag emoji was added in Unicode 9.0 (2016). The original physical flag was designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978 for San Francisco's Gay Freedom Day Parade. Each color has meaning: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, and so on.
Most platforms show a six-stripe rainbow flag (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet) waving. Some platforms like Apple show it as a waving flag while others display a more static design. The core rainbow colors remain consistent across all major platforms.
The rainbow flag is a ZWJ sequence (white flag + rainbow). On older devices or systems without full emoji support, it may appear as a white flag and rainbow separately. Modern devices from 2016 onward generally display it correctly as a single flag.
